Eat
greens for a healthy heart
If you want to reduce your
risk of a heart attack step up your vegetable intake.
The magic ingredient is folic acid, a B vitamin. In a
Canadian study looking at more than 5,000 men and women
over the age of 15, those with low levels of folic acid
were more likely to experience a fatal heart attack. It
has been known that eating folic acid during pregnancy
helps prevent spina bifida, anaemia and skin and
digestive orders in babies. However, this is the first
time it has been found to prevent heart disease. Its
though that folic acid helps the body process an amino
acid called homocysteine, which otherwise causes
thickening of the arteries. The best source of folic
acid are dark green vegetables, liver, kidney, nuts,
wholemeal bread and whole grain breakfast cereals.
